Moving design info from Designer to JDeveloper

Yesterday I attended a seminar at IT-eye. Andrej Koelewijn was presenting about a project he did for us. Two of our own developers and he created a disconnected Swing client to report donor information to our central database. What really caught my attention was a presentation by a client of IT-eye on their choice to drop Designer and move all design information to JDeveloper.

They decided they wanted to drop the tool Designer, but not all the information they gathered in it since the mid 90’s. He had quite a number of arguments why they made this choice and I must say that most of them sounded quite reasonable. You might be in quite a different situation and decide to go with Designer for a couple of more years.

I guess we’re in the same situation; you’ve got tons of information in Oracle Designer. Unfortunately Oracle hasn’t really added new functionality to Designer for quite a while and their statement of direction sais they won’t be adding new features or enhancements. All the new things you’re developing (10g specifics, J2EE apps, etc) cannot be modelled in Designer. The 100% (re)generation goal you used to have becomes more and more difficult or impossible if you want to use these new features.

They decided to drop the generators in Designer and just continue to maintain the Forms and Reports in the respective Builders. But what about all the design information in the Designer repository? They looked at the large number of different objects in Designer. This leads to a huge number of properties you can set. Analysis shows that only a small number of these properties really hold valuable information. A lot of them are never used or are specific to the generators. The actual business information is stored in a relative small number of properties. The other valuable information is stored in all the relationships between the objects (owned by, called by, etc).

They decided to convert all relevant information to plain ASCII files. Each object (business function, table, etc) was stored in a separate text file. The files were placed in a directory tree related to their application system and object type. Each file contains both the design/business information and the actual code. For example the text file for a table not only contains the description from Designer, but also the actual CREATE statement.

The files are versioned using CVS and edited through JDeveloper. They created some small JDeveloper plugins to ease the editing of these files. The plugin added some tabs to the editor of JDeveloper. The normal Source tab shows the entire file. A custom tab Documentation showed only the documentation part of the file and a Code tab showed the SQL statements. A new tab Test was added to store test cases in the future. The tabs are just an easy way to edit separate sections of the text file, but they do make it a lot easier.

They also created a custom plugin to JDeveloper to show the “network diagram”. That’s all the relations (owned by, called by) between the different objects. This shows a tree structure in the structure pane of JDeveloper.

I loved their KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) approach. Storing it in plain text files and building on top of great functionality already available in tools (CVS + JDeveloper). Perhaps I have to let the idea rest for a while and look at it again in a couple of weeks/months. Who knows where this may lead us?

Update: To my surprise, this entry has been linked from the OTN homepage! I also noticed in Andrej Koelewijn’s post, that the (Dutch) presentation is available for download. I wasn’t really sure if they wanted me to use the client name in this blog entry. Since Andrej did it, I guess it is okay to say it was Jules de Ruijter of Centraal Boekhuis and to thank him for a very interesting presentation. Centraal Boekhuis is a very well known Oracle shop in the Netherlands. Toon Koppelaars of Centraal Boekhuis wrote the award winning paper “A Database-centric Approach to J2EE Application Development” last year.

  1. Great but it would be better that jdev team include such functionalities into jdev and why not as xml document and xmlschema into xmldb as a central open repository.

    I’m currently working in a business intelligence project where we are in a way to define our own definition because all repositories that currently exists (or we known something about) are technologies oriented and not multilingual. So we have to get the data from the technologies (warehouse builder, sas, database) to bind it to business need, business case, business rules.

    Why oracle doesn’t offer an native export from his different repositories (database, warehousebuilder, jdev, etc) in xml compliant document so we can use this basis to override these technical information related to techonologies to business cases.

    It is an interesting read and stirs some more ideas as well. It would have been a good presentation for the ODTUG conference I am currently visiting; the crowd here would swallow this - hook, line and sinker. They are looking for Designer replacements quite urgently, given the lack of future perspective coming from Oracle.

The Designer audience will be specially interested to see how easy it is for them to create an extension just like the one you mentioned. It is of course so useful to track relationships.

    I didn’t make the plug-ins myself. I just attended the presentation where it was all explained and demoed. Jeroen van Schaik of IT-Eye made the plug-ins for Centraal Boekhuis. CB themselves converted the information in the Designer repository to flat text-files.

    During the presentation Jeroen noted that it was relatively straightforward to create the plug-ins. If you want more detailed technical info on what they did, you should probably contact Jules de Ruijter of Centraal Boekhuis, or their IT partner IT-Eye.

  8. The plug in (what’s in a name) is just a java component using the Jdeveloper SDK. It offers new functionality in Jdev on 4 aspects:

    • the edit pane
    • the navigator pane
    • the structure pane
    • a ‘find’ option

    Before you read furhter, some standards have to be set:
    we use OBJECT as a synonym for SOURCEFILE. Please note that a sourcefile may also be just a description of a business process, since we used upper case in Designer, we have a lot of that types of objects

    The edit pane:

    • using homegrown but xml-alike symbols we distinguish source code and design-documentation within a sourcefile. We also intend to distinguish module-test information. The symbols al start with “--” to make sure it is comment when deploying in the database, followed by CB (abbreviation of our company name) and the last part is one of the list “code”, “doc” and “test”. Thus the symbols are “--<cbdoc>” and “--</cbdoc>”. The java plug-in then creates tabs in the edit pane for each part of the sourcecode. When using CVS for versioning, a total of 5 tabs is available:
    • source: the sourcefile as is
    • code: the part of the sourcefile containing sourcecode (including some comments)
    • doc: the part of the sourcefile containing the documentation e.g. design info (Designer terminology: the property Description)
    • test: the part of the sourcefile containing test info
    • history the Jdev generated tab showing version information

    Finally, the plug-in in this pane offers realtime synchronisation between all tabs. Developers like this feature because it offers a modern version of the yellow balloons in Designer!

    The navigator pane
    In this pane the extensions offer options to create new objects, to remove objects (an object is any kind of sourcefile) and offers real-time synchronisation with CVS. An option to rename an object was created. Renaming is an issue as CVS does not support this (Designer does, so developers are used to act do so). This rename option is a valuable extension on Jdev/CVS.

    The structure pane
    The extension created to operate in the structure pane is the most valuable one. It is the 100% translation of all relations that implicitly or explicitly exist within Designer. All relation info is extracted from Designer into a table in the database. The extension then shows the types of relation and a double-click on a relation initiates the navigator pane to move to that object (sourcefile). Relations can be added, edited and removed, all including the CVS actions involved. Of course issues as collapse/expand all relations are available (some tables in our custom software have hundreds of relations). For the Designer users: the F12 (forward) and Shift-F12 (backward) options are also implemented.

    In this regard it is worth to reveil the solutions for the “PL/SQL implementation” option in Designer. We created a dummy file representing a schema owner and/or a database instance. Next we created relations from all database objects to this dummy file. The result is we now have a quick insight in the pl/sql implementations as a part of all relations of all kinds of sourcefiles.

    The find option
    The default Find option of Jdev only supports Find-in-file. It does not support Find-of-filename. Thus we created it by ourselves. A surprising benefit was the unexpected speed of this new find option. Sorry to say, on this part we did a better job than Oracle ……

    I will send some screenshots of the plug-in to Wilfred and ask him to make it available for all of you.

    Finally, there is one (really just one) concern about migrating from Designer to Jdev:
    we experienced that when the number of sourcefiles increases the performance of the navigator pane DE-creases. First we tuned all involved java and sql statements. Then we tested the Jdev behaviour in standard Jdev. The problem is part of JDev as far as we could determine. We would appreciate Oracle to solve this problem. More (technical) details can be offered.
