WordPress plug in for Google Analytics

I managed to get a Google Analytics account. I added the tracker JavaScript to the footer of all my pages, as instructed by Google Analytics. This gave me some great statistics to start with, but I wanted more.

I also want to track outgoing links to other sites and links to downloads (e.g. PDF documents) on my own site. Google Analtytics can do this, but you have to add an onClick JavaScript to all these links. I didn’t like the idea of editing all my blog entries to add an onClick event to the links. So I ended up writing a WordPress plugin that does it for me. You can download the plugin for your own use.

  2. In Google Analytics go to All Reports > Content Optimization > Content Drilldown (and/or Top Content).
    With the default settings you will find your downloads under a virtual directory ‘downloads’, your outbound links under ‘outgoing’ and the mailto: links under ‘mailto’.
    You should also see these links under All Reports > Content Optimization > Navigational Analysis > Top Exit Points (and/or All Navigation)

  3. Thank you for your quick answer! I searched this menu items in Google Analytics, but in the moment there ist nothing with “outgoing” and so on. I know, Google Analytics has a timelack of about 3 hours, but my first test ist 12 hours ago.
    Hm … in the footer.php I leaved the GA original code - that’s okay, isn’t it? Or is there something with the new cache feature of WordPress 2.0?

  4. I don’t see the tracker code added to outbound links on your weblog. Perhaps it has something to do with WordPress 2.0. I’ll install it today and give it a try myself.

    I also saw that you had the Google tracker included twice. Once by my plugin and once through your template. This probably causes Google to double count all your pages. It is best to remove it from your template and let Ultimate Google Analytics handle it all. In a future version I’ll try to suppress adding the JavaScript if it is already there.

    I’ve tested the plugin with WordPress v2.0 and it all worked fine on my installation. I’ve just uploaded the next version (0.2) of the plugin to http://www.oratransplant.nl/uga

    Could you please give that one a try. You can then enable debugging in the options page. Could you please enable debugging for a while on your site so I can have a look, or send the HTML code of a page with debugging enabled by email to wilfred _at_ vanderdeijl.com
